Karkidaka Oushadha Kanji is a traditional medicinal rice soup consumed in Kerala, India, during the Karkidakam month of the Malayalam calendar (roughly July-August). It's known for its health benefits, particularly during the monsoon season.

Ingredients:

  • Njavara rice (a unique short-grain rice variety)
  • Medicinal herbs (often including turmeric, ginger, cumin, fenugreek, etc.)
  • Pulses and cereals
  • Coconut milk (sometimes)
  • Jaggery (sometimes)

Preparation: Boil 50g Njavara rice in water until halfway cooked. Add 7–10g of herbal powder and cook until the consistency is like porridge. Add 70–100ml of coconut milk and simmer briefly. Add rock salt to taste. Optional: sautéed Indian shallots in a little ghee can be added.

Consumption:

Karkidaka Oushadha Kanji is typically consumed for a minimum of 7 days, though some recommend 21 days for optimal results. It's usually eaten for breakfast or as a light meal throughout the day.

Preparation:

The exact recipe can vary, but it generally involves boiling the rice with the herbs and pulses in water. Coconut milk and jaggery may be added for extra flavor. Here's a link to a recipe you can try if you'd like to make it at home
